Abstract

Digital collections has become a very topical and prioritized subject for research and archival libraries. Research libraries, which are primarily university libraries, focus on making the material available on electronical bases, whereas digitizing the cultural heritage falls within the scope of archival libraries.

The priorities for research libraries are:

Digital information:
  • Electronical publications
  • Online publications
The traditional publications on paper, which have been made available also electronically.
Archival libraries at the same time focus on digitized publications.

The main reasons or digitizing: attractiveness for the organisation, the quality service, the supporting role for research and online studies, the preservation of national publications.

In Estonia it mainly means the access by the owner, there is no OCR support, the long term archiving is done only by one collection.

The expectations of the user: universal access, open environment and standards, the service-oriented approach.

Problems: who will be the owner of the collection, avoiding the duplicates, copyright, data protection, the quality control, some resources need constant editing.

Perspective: open standards, the special archivation for long term preservation, the foundation of common portal of research libraries etc. The unified search engine between different databases.
