NISPEZ → NISPEZ II: Six Years of Direct Information Support of Slovak Science

Abstract

National information infrastructure for research and development (R & D) in Slovakia is presented by the National Information System to Promote Research and Development in Slovakia – Access to Electronic Information Resources, in academic community known as the NISPEZ project. Comprehensive model of centralized acquisition of access to electronic information resources (e–resources), as well as other activities serving their user support and effective use of project implementation continues as The NISPEZ II project. It has significant impact on Slovak R & D community, its development and competitiveness in the world. It is a unique solution at national level with long term implementation (years 2008 – 2015 with a real view to continuation). This paper reports information on the current implementation status and the following specific objectives of the two projects aimed at acquisition of access to a portfolio of global e–resources. Emphasis is placed on the overall evaluation of the project NISPEZ six years, experience with this solution, a solution to the financial security of contractual relationships with publishers and suppliers, and its continuation in the project NISPEZ II, as well as looking at possible future prospects. Principal investigator of the project – Slovak Centre of Scientific and Technical Information in Bratislava (SC STI) plays an important role in field of promoting science, research, librarianship and libraries in Slovakia. SC STI is a national information centre and specialized scientific public library in Slovak Republic focusing on technical departments and selected natural sciences, economic sciences and humanities.

Author's professional CV

He started his professional carrier successively as assistant, fellow and lecturer in the field of biochemistry at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the Comenius University in Bratislava, the biggest and oldest university in Slovakia. Later he became the director of the Institute of biochemistry and biotechnology at the university. Since 1997 he is the Head of Molecular biology department at Comenius University and since 2007 also the Director General of the Slovak Centre of Scientific and Technical Information. In March 2011, he was appointed as the Vice-rector of the Comenius University in Bratislava. The considerable part of his professional activity has also been devoted to science popularisation, focusing mainly on biology and biotechnology fields. Furthermore Jan acts as the Chair of the Slovak Association for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the Chair of the Committee for postgraduate studies in the field of molecular biology, the Chair of the Commission for the biological safety at the Ministry of Environment of the SR, as well as a member of Scientific Committees at Comenius University and at Slovak Academy of Sciences. He is the plenipotentiary representative of the Slovak Republic in the European Molecular Biology Laboratory; Knowledge Based Bio-Economy Network; and in the European Research Infrastructure Consortium established by the European Commission.
