Abstract

Information and communication technologies have become an everyday part of our lives. They not only make the job easier in many cases, but they also make us face new opportunities and challenges. In branch of processing and access to information, which clearly includes also library and information systems, ICT clearly became the driving force. The surrounding environment is changed under their influence, thus creating new requirements for Library Information System (LIS).

At this paper, we focus on selected ICT and its influence and impact for the LIS. Methods of integration and adaptation of these new technologies and their possibilities in libraries regarding to user are presented here. Several aspects influencing their usability overall, not only by humans, are pointed out. At the conclusion the question „What LIS represents nowadays“ is answered.

Author's professional CV

Author graduated from the Slovak University of Agriculture, division: Automatic control systems. She has been working in branch of cultural heritage for 25 years. The companies Cosmotron Bohemia and Slovakia which were founded and are lead by her, are focused on analysis, concepts, automation and process management for the processing and access of information in memory institutions.

She monitors development and trends in this sector and intensely helps in shaping and implementing methodologies for their application in our environment. She also acts as a scientific assistant and educationalist in Department of Informatics and Information Technologies on Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava.
