Abstract

Not only in our lands, but also in the world we can see that impact factor of journals (ISI, USA) plays major role in comparing singletons and whole scientific teams. This leads to publishing valuable articles only in journals with high IF and can imply loss of creativity of national teams and institutions.

Other means of evaluating quality of scientific work are being researched on the basis of critic of these approaches (R. Merton a Matthew effect, Matthew's core journals, status of Nobel Prize holders, Relative Citation Impact, Relative National Citation Impact, Relative International Citation Impact).

The paper closes with comparison of European medical journals made by available facts from Journal Citation Reports and Polish journal citation index - Index Copernicus.
