The Role of Public Libraries as the Contact Points of e-Government

Abstract: Present changes within the society and the changes of the functionality of particular institutions have not let the public libraries without an affect. Although the original library service has been widened, the main goal of libraries as the providers of information is still the same. The Ministry of Informatics, Czech Republic would like to take advantage of their potential by implementing the Portal of Public Sector and lay hold on highly skilled staff as the contact points of e-Government with the aim to come closer to the public. Crew, thanks to their professionalism and to the librarian equipment, can provide electronic public services on a high quality level. At the same time they can also be helpful while creating and filling the meta-information system of information sources within the public bodies.
 
About the author: The author graduated at University of Economics in Prague, dept. of information technologies. She was involved in BPR consultancy and in implementation of information systems in the years 1995-1999. Then worked in the field of new technologies statistics and later on in 2001/2002 spent half a year at the European Commission. She applied herself to e-democracy and e-government projects within IST program there. Last year she was engaged in the initiatives eEurope+ 2003 and eEurope 2005. Currently the author works at the Ministry of Informatics, directorate of life-events projects.
