Making Use and Sense of Scholarly Usage Data

Autor: Herbert Van de Sompel, Los Alamos National Laboratory, USA

Fulltext

Abstract:

Scholarly usage data holds the potential to be used as a tool to study the dynamics of scholarship in real time, and to form the basis for the definition of novel metrics of scholarly impact. However, the groundwork to reliably and validly exploit usage data is lacking, and the exact nature, meaning and applicability of usage-based metrics is poorly understood.

The MESUR project led by dr. Johan Bollen at the Los Alamos National Laboratory constitutes a systematic effort to define, validate and cross-validate a range of usage-based metrics of scholarly impact. MESUR has collected nearly 1 billion usage eal consortia to construct a massive usage data reference set.
This presentation will discuss the goals and methodology of the MESUR project, as well as some results including a first-ever map of science derived from usage data, and a comparison of a variety of metrics based on usage and citation data.
